Programme Overview: Advanced Sensors is developing sensor technologies for intelligent
maintenance systems to detect and quantify machine degradation and
structural damage, including:
- applications ranging from sub-components to large-scale structures
- detecting onset and progression of corrosion and material
degradation in many different environments.
Understanding the early detection and repair of corrosion, material
degradation and structural damage (MDSD) is an important aspect of
operating modern infrastructure in industry sectors such as mining,
military aircraft, shipping, marine structures and civil
infra-structure.
Corrosion and MDSD cannot be eliminated but they can be managed, so
early detection is critical i.e. tools to inform when moisture has
penetrated paint and anti-corrosion surface treatments.
Sensor technologies include:
- fibre optic sensors
- piezo-electric sensors and actuators
- sensors for the rapid assessment of thickness degradation
- self-powered sensors.
