About CIEAM

CIEAM is a Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) that works to improve the efficiency of infrastructure and engineering management, and the profitability of Australian industry. We achieve these improvements by creating and implementing integrated engineering asset management systems and know-how.

Working in the defence, utilities, transportation and process sectors, we:

  • Optimise asset management systems,
  • Seek out and develop innovative technologies, processes and programmes,
  • Enhance infrastructure cost-effectiveness, productivity and longevity, and
  • Build Australian capability in research, postgraduate education, and training and service provision.

As a CRC, our research focuses on real asset management problems faced by industry today. We work in direct partnership with our participants, helping them leverage research and development investments to generate tangible cost savings.

CIEAM's work brings together leading academic and industry researchers from around the country who identify and promote whole-of-life asset management strategies, including:

  • Optimising asset availability and performance,
  • The more accurate capture and use of data, and
  • Minimising the need for expert human intervention.

Current projects

Examples of current CIEAM research work include the development of:

  • Analytical and visualisation models for asset management decision support processes from operational to corporate levels,
  • Training materials for award courses as well as professional and technical in-service training,
  • Sensor networks to improve failure detection, material corrosion and tracking of reliability and environmental risks,
  • Methods for assessing data quality and complementary management practices to improve data collection and error checking,
  • Practical procedural models, tools and protocols for optimal human performance and critical occupational health and safety issues, and
  • Tools and standards for data exchange between technical and management information systems.

Defining integrated engineering asset management

Integrated Asset Management and more specifically, integrated engineering asset management is a systematic, structured process covering the whole life of physical assets.

The underlying assumption is that assets exist to support the organisation's delivery strategies, so they require a certain level of management insight and expertise from diverse organisational disciplines.
